Orlando "Macho" Cordero's PledgePage

Dear Friends and Family,

You are invited to participate with me in an Olympic distance triathlon. We'll be swimming for 0.9 miles in the Hudson River, then we'll run out of the river and bike 25 miles, up the West Side Highway. Then we'll drop our bikes and run the remaining 6.2 miles to the finish line. Before you size me up for a straight jacket, let me explain how you can participate without leaving the comfort of your home! On June 27th, I will be participating in the Ford New York City Triathlon along with the other members of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program from New York City.

I will be participating in memory of my grandfather, Jose "Pepe" Maldonado who passed away due to lymphoma in 1997. It can be a very trying time for a family losing a loved one to this disease. Chances are YOU have lost a loved one to a blood cancer. You may know someone that is battling lymphoma, leukemia, or myeloma. They are the inspiration for the much needed research. These are the people who will inspire me on my journey. On June 27th, I will wear an Honored Teammate bracelet for my grandfather, and when the going gets tough, I will think of him.

As you may or may not know, leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children and the leading fatal malignant disease of men and women under the age of thirty-five. There are approximately 45,000 people in the US living with myeloma and an estimated 14,600 new cases of multiple myeloma are diagnosed each year. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) will affect an estimated 54,000 Americans this year and kill 19,000. The incidence of NHL has doubled since the mid-1970s and no one knows why. Although the cause of these blood cancers remains unknown, recently developed treatments and steady advances in research bring us closer to a cure every day.

Here's where you come in. Remember when I invited you to participate with me in the triathlon? I'll do the training, swimming, cycling, and running. You can participate by donating. These research advances have been achieved as a result of contributions made by companies, foundations and individuals. Donations are 100% tax-deductible. The New York City Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has a goal of raising over $3 million dollars this year through TEAM IN TRAINING. As a member of the team, I am helping TEAM IN TRAINING meet this goal and I am writing to ask for your help.

As a participant in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program, I have pledged to help raise money for blood cancer research and patient assistance programs. I am writing to you, to ask for your support. My goal is to raise $2,300 by April 25, 2004 and the remainder by June 1, 2004. You may be asking yourself, "Why a triathlon?" The triathlon is symbolic of the struggle that people suffering from leukemia and lymphoma endure everyday. It is a true test of endurance. Every step I take is a step closer to the finish line and symbolic of how every dollar you can donate is a step to finding a cure. I intend to take every step to finish this race. Help me by donating to take a step closer to a cure.

God saw you were getting tired
and a cure was not to be,
so he put his arms around you
and whispered come to me
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly,
we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
he only takes the best.

Thank your for your generosity,

Orlando Cordero
